The Science Behind the Finish

Unlike liquid paint, powder coating uses dry thermoplastic or thermoset polymer resins applied through corona discharge electrostatic spraying. The charged particles adhere to your electrically grounded metal component, creating an even coat before the part enters our convection cure oven. At 375–400°F, the powder particles gel, flow, and chemically crosslink into a continuous film that becomes molecularly bonded to the substrate surface. The result is a finish that outperforms conventional wet painting in chip resistance, chemical tolerance, and service life.

  • Electrostatic application deposits 95–98% of material onto the part, versus 30–40% transfer efficiency with solvent-based spray painting
  • Zero volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released during application or curing — meets SCAQMD Rule 1106 for the South Coast Air Basin
  • Single-coat coverage achieves the same protection as 2–3 layers of liquid coating, reducing material use and processing time
  • Cured films typically measure 2–6 mils thick depending on specification

Our Process

From Raw Metal to Finished Part

Preparation

Before any coating touches your component, substrates move through our pretreatment line. Oil, mill scale, oxidation, and fabrication residue are stripped via alkaline wash, phosphate conversion coating (for ferrous metals), or chromate treatment (for aluminum alloys).

Masking & racking

Precision matters at this stage. Our technicians apply high-temp masking tapes, silicone plugs, and custom fixtures to protect threads, tapped holes, mating surfaces, and critical dimensions from coating buildup. Components are racked to ensure optimal spray angles and unobstructed airflow during cure.

Application & cure

Coating technicians program automated reciprocators and manual spray guns based on part geometry, Faraday cage areas, and film thickness specifications. After powder application, parts enter our gas-fired convection oven where the specified cure schedule (time × temperature) is strictly monitored and logged for quality traceability.

Inspection & packaging

Every batch undergoes visual inspection against ASTM D1729 standard viewing conditions, dry film thickness gauging per SSPC-PA 2, and MEK rub testing for cure verification. Parts are then foam-wrapped, partition-boxed, or crated depending on finish sensitivity and shipping distance.

Quality protocols

How We Verify Every Batch

Consistency isn’t accidental — it’s the output of documented procedures, calibrated instrumentation, and technicians trained to NADCA and PCI certification standards. Whether your job is one custom piece or five thousand production units, the same quality gates apply.

  • Daily testing of bath concentrations, temperature, and contact time. Coating adhesion failures virtually always trace back to inadequate surface prep; we prevent that at the source.
  • Dry film thickness (DFT) measured at multiple points per part using calibrated eddy-current
  • STM D3359 cross-hatch adhesion testing performed on first-article and random sampling basis.
  • Parts are evaluated under north-facing daylight simulation (D65 illuminant) to detect color drift, orange peel, drips, or contamination.

Other metal fabrication Services

Many of the parts we coat were laser-cut, bent, welded, or hardware-assembled in our shop hours earlier. That continuity eliminates freight between vendors, prevents handling damage between operations, and tightens overall production schedules by days or weeks. If your project requires multiple manufacturing processes, we’ll quote the complete scope and coordinate the internal workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Need help with powder coating service? Contact our team at support@laserbend.com or (818) 504-0810.

For jobs arriving pretreatment-ready and using stock colors, 3–5 business days is standard. Jobs requiring custom color matching, masking of critical surfaces, or large batch quantities may extend to 7–10 days. Combined fabrication + coating jobs are quoted with a consolidated timeline.

Yes. We match to RAL, Pantone, Munsell, or physical samples supplied by the customer. Custom matches carry a small setup fee and typically add 5–7 days for powder procurement. We recommend ordering a sample panel for approval before full production.

In most cases, yes. Thermoset coatings may be chemically stripped or thermally burned off without damaging the underlying substrate (provided the base metal’s temper is not compromised by re-cure temperatures). We’ll evaluate the specific part and recommend the most cost-effective rework approach.
