Why Use Hardware Inserts in Sheet Metal?

PEM Hardware inserts are one of the most important tools in modern sheet metal fabrication. They solve problems that traditional methods cannot handle. Whether you are working with thin metal, need quick assembly, or face access limitations, PEM hardware inserts provide the perfect solution. LaserBend installs these inserts directly into your sheet metal during fabrication, making your parts stronger, faster to assemble, and more cost-effective. Here are the main reasons why hardware inserts are essential for your projects:

  • Thin Metal Works Better — You can use thinner, lighter sheet metal without losing strength. Thin metal is cheaper and lighter than thick metal.
  • Blind Assembly is Easy — Install fasteners where you cannot reach the back side. Perfect for sealed boxes and enclosed spaces.
  • Stronger Fasteners — Insert hardware is more secure than tapped threads in thin metal. Your parts hold up longer.
  • No Tapping Needed — Forget about cutting threads directly into metal. Pressing inserts is faster and cleaner.
  • Save Money Overall — Lower labor costs, cheaper materials, and faster production add up to big savings.

PEM inserts are small metal fasteners that are pressed into drilled holes in sheet metal or other materials. They are manufactured by PennEngineering and are used to create permanent threaded fastening points. Instead of cutting threads directly into thin metal (which is weak), you drill a hole and press in a PEM insert.

PEM stands for Precision Engineered Metal. In sheet metal, PEM refers to pre-formed metal inserts that are pressed into holes during fabrication. These inserts create female threaded nuts, male threaded studs, or spacers (standoffs) directly in your metal parts. PEM hardware eliminates the need to cut threads, tap holes, or use complex fastening methods.

PEM manufactures many types of fasteners, but the three most common are:

  1. Nuts — These are female inserts with internal threads. A bolt screws into the nut to join parts together. Nuts are strong and reliable when installed on the correct side of the metal.
  2. Studs — These are male inserts with external threads that stick out from the metal. You can screw nuts onto studs or use them to create threaded mounting points. Studs are perfect for stacking multiple parts together.
  3. Standoffs — These are spacers that hold parts at a fixed distance apart. They prevent contact between the metal surface and mounted components (like circuit boards). Standoffs are essential in electronics where spacing is critical.

The 3 thread rule comes from ASME B1.1 (Unified Inch Screw Threads) standards. It states that the last effective thread on a bolt or stud occurs about three threads from the end. This means a bolt or stud must extend at least three full threads beyond the end of the nut to create a secure, effective connection. If less than three threads are engaged, the fastener may slip or fail.

The minimum material thickness for cut threads (tapping) is typically 1.5 times the diameter of the bolt or screw. With PEM inserts, the minimum thickness is much less—often just 0.040 to 0.100 inches depending on the insert size. This is why PEM hardware is perfect for thin sheet metal. LaserBend will verify that your material thickness is correct for your chosen insert size.

  1. M14x1.25 is a metric thread specification that tells you:
  2. M — Indicates this is a metric thread (using millimeters instead of inches)
  3. 14 — The diameter of the bolt or stud is 14 millimeters
  4. 1.25 — The pitch is 1.25 millimeters. Pitch is the distance from one thread to the next thread. It controls how tight the thread is. A smaller pitch means more threads packed together (finer threads). A larger pitch means fewer threads packed together (coarser threads).

So M14x1.25 means a 14mm diameter bolt with 1.25mm between each thread. This is a very common size in industrial and automotive applications. When you see this specification, you know exactly what size and type of bolt, nut, or stud you need. LaserBend offers metric inserts including M14 in various pitch options to match your requirements
